It was a day
full of treasure hunts and diving for pearls at the Visvesvaraya Industrial and
Technological Museum as robots built by students demonstrated their abilities
for the regional round of the Indian Robot Olympiad which concluded on 6.9.2015.
Regional
championship
The event saw
participation of 100 children divided into 30 teams. Students had come from
places including Mysuru and Ooty to take part in the regional championship for
a chance to compete in the national and international Olympiads, which will be
held in the coming months.
“The theme
today was pearl diving and treasure hunting. Students were expected to build
robots which would be able to pick up pearls from a seabed-like surface,” said
Christopher Dhas, associate head of Edutech, one of the organisers of the
regional Olympiad.
Besides
constructing the robots, the participants were expected to program the machines
and demonstrate them live for the judges. “It took us around three weeks to
build the robot. We are hoping that our entry will make it to the World Robot
Olympiad,” said Ramakrishna R., a student of Seva Bharathi Trust Government
School who was part of four teams from government schools across the city.
Representing
the State
Winners of the
regional rounds will participate in the Indian Robot Olympiad scheduled to be
held in Gurgaon on September 26 and 27 ahead of the world championship in
November.
